In my review of Cyber Safety Lesson Plans, the good thing I noticed is how some refer back to 'stranger danger' or other familiar themes. For elementart age children this is a familiar concept that I think they can easily transfer to computer use. One site also utilized thefamiliar idea of Halloween masks as a way to explain the inability to know who you are conversing with online. The site reminded students that like Halloween masks hide the identity of a person so does the computer. My concern with Cyber Safety Lessons is not the lesson plan itself but rather it's actual effectiveness.
Irregardless of how much we instruct students on cyber safety, we can only do so much. We can control where they go while in school but have no way to moniter them beyond that point. As far as I recall, any time I have heard of issues with children and a computer it has happened during their "home" time. We must as educators address this issue, especially since the current goal is to have a wider use of technology in the class room. However, I think it would be most beneficial if we also include a program for educating the parents as well.
No matter what children are told their behavior is guided by the behavior that they see modeled for them by their parents. Adults are at risk of computer dangers also. If we could adjust how adults utilize the internet we would have a better chance of safeguarding our students. Probably a lofty goal, but a good one to start adressing.
